Roy Keane did not enjoy watching the London derby on Monday night, insisting that the game was lacking in quality.
Although Spurs fans can be proud of the way their side fought with nine men for much of the second half and the courage they showed, it was ultimately a day they will want to forget, given the final result as well as the various injuries and suspensions they suffered.
However, many neutrals would have certainly loved what they were watching as the game was packed with drama from start to finish.
Ange Postecoglou’s men decided to play an extremely high defensive line after they went down to nine men in an effort to squeeze play up the pitch, and the tactics almost worked as the home side had a couple of chances to equalise before Chelsea scored two late goals in stoppage time.
Jamie Carragher admitted that he absolutely loved watching what Tottenham did, remarking that it was something he had never seen before (Sky Sports).
However, Keane did not enjoy the game as much as his fellow pundit, with the former Man Utd captain questioning the ‘crazy decisions’ that some Spurs players made during the game.
The 52-year-old told Stick to Football podcast: “I didn’t really enjoy it [Tottenham vs Chelsea]. I thought there was too much going on, there were a couple of sendings off and I didn’t think the quality was that great in the game. Spurs were up against it and got a couple of applause but Chelsea were very average.
“When there’s a couple of sendings off, it spoils the game and I know there’s plenty of talking points but sometimes you sit down and just want to watch a good quality game.
“There were too many stoppages – generally speaking, it’s great to have some talking points but there was too much madness and ultimately, the Spurs players were making some crazy decisions.
“The first 15 minutes they were fine, but even afterwards I was disappointed with Chelsea. I know they scored late on, and it looks a comfortable scoreline, but up until the last few minutes, Spurs had a chance.”
Spurs Web Opinion
In terms of pure entertainment value, there has not been a better game in the Premier League this season. However, I can see where Keane is coming from regarding Chelsea’s lack of quality in the second half and a couple of Tottenham players losing their heads.
