Lottery player cashes SC ticket — and wins much more than expected. ‘I started crying’
A South Carolina woman tried her luck on a Powerball ticket and wound up winning 10 times what she expected, lottery officials said.
“I thought maybe I won $10,000 at the most, but I didn’t know,” the Lowcountry woman told South Carolina Education Lottery officials. “I’m so very grateful.”
She was cashing her winning ticket when officials told her she won $100,000 in the Sept. 30 drawing, according to a Nov. 6 news release.
She bought the ticket at the Quick Food Mart #2 in Summerville and chose the PowerPlay option, which lets players “multiply non-jackpot prizes by 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 times,” according to the Powerball website.
She matched four white balls and the red Powerball to win $50,000, then doubled it with the Power Play x2.
“I started crying,” she told lottery officials. “Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought something like that would have happened to me.”
The woman didn’t say how she plans to spend her newfound wealth.
As of Monday, Nov. 6., the estimated Powerball jackpot climbed to $179 million.
Summerville is about 30 miles northwest of Charleston.
