Fans in England are beginning to see how good Guglielmo Vicario is, but according to his former deputy at Empoli, Samir Ujkani, the Italian stopper was always destined for greatness.
Finding a new number-one goalkeeper was at the top of the agenda for Tottenham this summer after the loss of form suffered by Hugo Lloris.
While it looked for a long time like the answer to Tottenham’s problem would be David Raya, a move for the Brentford keeper fell apart and Spurs acted quickly to sign Guglielmo Vicario instead.
Despite initial doubts from some, Vicario has gone from being an unknown quantity to one of the most impressive shot-stoppers in the Premier League. Vicario now has the highest save percentage in the division (79.2) and has kept four clean sheets this season (FBRef).
The 27-year-old has been at the heart of Ange Postecoglou‘s early success at Spurs, but we shouldn’t be surprised. Samir Ujkani, who was back-up to Vicario at Empoli, has revealed to TuttoMercatoWeb what he was told when he joined the Italian club.
He said: “When I made the choice to go to Empoli, [goalkeeping coach, Vincenzo] Sicignano was there and he warned me that Vicario could become a phenomenon.
“Guglielmo has grown a lot, we are all proud of him. Italy has the goalkeeper of the future. For me he could go anywhere; whoever took him would have hit bingo. But the right choice was certainly to go to Tottenham.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Vicario has been incredible and has settled into life at Tottenham so quickly. His performance against Chelsea sums it up, really. He was throwing himself at everything, sweeping up at the back, and made life very difficult for the Blues. If we’re to be successful this year, Vicario will be central to that.
