Two people are facing weapons charges after crashing into a barricade near the Capitol early Sunday morning.
United States Capitol Police said in a press release that one of its officers attempted to make a traffic stop about 2:15 a.m. Sunday when they noticed a potentially impaired driver near Union Station in Washington. When the officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the driver drove away and crashed into a Capitol Complex vehicle barricade near the Capitol.
Officers chased the two individuals, Ricardo Glass and Onosetale Okojie, when they began to race away from the crash and later apprehended both individuals, according to the press release. Capitol Police said the officers found a Glock handgun with a 22-round extended magazine in the car next to an additional magazine in the passenger seat.
Officers also found a second Glock that had a “giggle switch,” which could turn the weapon into a machine gun, according to the release. The Capitol Police also said the car was stolen out of Prince George’s County, Md.
Glass and Okojie are facing several charges from the incident, including unlawful weapon charges like carrying a pistol without a license, the possession of an unregistered firearm and unlawful possession of a machine gun. They are also charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle, receiving stolen property worth $1,000 or more, reckless driving and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, among other charges.
Capitol Police noted that this year, its officers have confiscated more than 30 guns, which are prohibited from Capitol grounds.
