Jason and Travis Kelce’s New Heights podcast has engrained itself into the hearts of many sports fans thanks to the duo’s charming and hilarious chemistry. And recently, the pair have started a segment to educate fans on the intricacies on football, leading to an illuminating moment for casual fans.
The term “hard count” is used to describe when quarterbacks try to get the defense to jump offside with voice inflection. During a segment in Thursday’s podcast called “No Dum Questions,” the brothers were asked to explain a hard count in detail, and even some longtime fans might learn something from this.

Jason, who’s been named to six Pro Bowls in 13 seasons with the Eagles, handled the explanation. Essentially, he said every NFL team has its own set cadence that typically includes the quarterback saying a color then a number followed by a color and a number then a “set hut.” An example of that would be “green 15, green 15, set hut,” and then the center would snap the ball. This would be considered snapping the ball “on one.”
A hard count simply means the snap will not be on the first “hut,” and the quarterback will use voice inflection in hopes of making a defender jump across the line of scrimmage early.
If you take nothing else from the video, just enjoy Jason’s incredible quarterbacking voice.
