The Nanaimo Clippers announced the appointment of Gaelan Patterson as the team's new Assistant Coach. Patterson, a former professional player with a strong background in player development, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the organization.
“Gaelan stood out immediately given his experience and knowledge of the game and for his passion for player development. In our due diligence, consistent comments made about his professionalism and character aligned with our organization’s core values,” stated Brad Kwong, Managing Partner of Northern Lights Hockey Canada.
Gaelan Patterson, a Saskatchewan native, is no stranger to the hockey world. Following a successful junior career with the WHL's Saskatoon Blades, Patterson was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the 7th round of the 2009 NHL Draft. His professional career included years with the AHL’s Abbotsford Heat, the Utah Grizzlies and Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL and three years in Europe playing in Norway, France and the UK.
Patterson’s success as a player is coupled with a deep understanding of skill development, having worked as a coach and mentor since his retirement in 2018. Most recently, Patterson assisted the Alberni Valley Bulldogs for the past two seasons while simultaneously acting as the General Manager and Head Coach of the VIJHL Port Alberni Bombers. Under Patterson’s leadership, the Bombers qualified for playoffs in their inaugural season 2021-22, and in 2022-23.

I’m looking forward to working with the players and staff to help continue to build on their success” said Patterson. “The team has a great history and an amazing fan base, and I can’t wait to jump in.”
Brad Kwong added, “The hiring of Gaelan is a positive step for the Clippers as we continue to emphasize our player-centric development model. He is a great addition to our coaching staff and I’m excited that our players will benefit from all that he brings.”
Patterson will be on the bench Friday, November 10, when the Clippers face the rival Victoria Grizzlies, 7 PM at Frank Crane Arena.
