The heads of 18 UN and non-UN humanitarian organizations have issued an uncommon joint statement urging an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire” in Israel and Palestine.
The statement unequivocally declares, “Enough is enough; this must stop immediately.” These 18 organizations are collectively known as the Inter-Agency Standing Committee.
Meanwhile, Martin Griffiths, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, said on his social media platform X, expressing concerns and said, “We need an immediate humanitarian ceasefire. It’s been 30 days. Enough is enough. This must stop now.”
In a rare display of unity, the Inter-Agency Standing Committee’s joint statement emphasizes the urgency of halting the ongoing conflict in the region. The call for a ceasefire comes as a response to the escalating violence, with the humanitarian leaders making a resounding plea for an immediate end to the hostilities.
The joint statement also condemns the October 7th attack by Hamas on Israel, in which Israeli authorities report that approximately 1,400 people lost their lives and over 200 individuals were taken hostage. The humanitarian organizations denounced this tragic event as part of their call for an immediate ceasefire.
The statement strongly condemns Israel’s actions in Gaza, characterizing the killing of civilians as an “outrage.” It highlights the dire humanitarian situation faced by 2.2 million Palestinians in Gaza, who have been subjected to a siege, lacking access to necessities such as food, water, medicine, electricity, and fuel.
The statement deems this situation as unacceptable, given the ongoing bombings of homes, shelters, hospitals, and places of worship.
In response to the escalating violence, Hamas reported on Sunday that the Israeli army conducted “intense bombings” in the vicinity of several hospitals in northern Gaza. This occurred shortly after telecommunications were cut in the area, as reported by AFP. The report underscores the challenging circumstances faced by both Palestinians and healthcare facilities in the region.
Israel has imposed a communication blackout in the Gaza Strip, marking the third such blackout since the onset of the conflict that began on October 7. This disruption further compounds the challenges faced by the people in the region.
According to the Ministry of Health, Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have resulted in the tragic loss of over 9,500 lives, with a devastating toll on civilians, including 3,900 children and more than 2,400 women, Al Arabia reported.
The humanitarian organizations’ joint statement highlights the urgent need for immediate treatment for over 23,000 injured individuals in overwhelmed hospitals.
