Afghan Cultural & Social Association Launches in Canada to Foster Inclusivity and Education
Toronto, Canada – The newly established Afghan Cultural & Social Association, named in honor of the esteemed Sayed Nadir Shah Al-Hussaini Kayani, has commenced its operations in Toronto. This initiative strives to cultivate an understanding of Afghan cultural, social, and educational relations both within Canada and internationally. With aspirations to extend its reach, the association plans to open branches worldwide, aiming to provide cultural and social services to Afghan immigrants globally.
In line with the values of its namesake, ‘Sayed Kayan‘, a revered Ismaili leader and scholar, the association dedicates itself to the preservation and promotion of Afghan culture and social values. Recognizing that cultural and social tolerance is essential for peaceful coexistence, the association intends to introduce and celebrate the diverse cultural and social customs of various Afghan communities. This effort will foster social pluralism and mutual respect among different groups, thus enriching the Canadian multicultural landscape.
Emphasizing the critical role of education in contemporary times, the association acknowledges the educational service gap that exists for Afghan children and youth. It supports universal education and is committed to enhancing educational services both within Afghanistan and in the diaspora, aiming to make a positive impact on the future generation.

About Sayed Kayan
Seyed Nadir Shah Kayani also known as Syed Kayan, a prominent poet, mystic, and orator, was born in 1276 in Kolab, Tajikistan, during his family’s exile from Afghanistan. Despite a lack of formal education, he was determined not to remain illiterate. Under the guidance of a mentor, he learned to read the Quran, studied Hafez, and practiced calligraphy. At the age of eleven, he began composing songs and couplets.
In 1304/1305 (Afghan calendar), he was chosen as the religious leader of the Ismaili community in Afghanistan. During his leadership, he fostered unity and cooperation among various religious sects and ethnic groups. However, political changes forced him into exile in Wardak Province. After the ascent of Mohammad Nader Shah in 1929, he returned to his homeland and devoted himself to creating artistic works.
Sayed Nadir Shah Kayani was not only a poet but also a visionary religious leader who encouraged his followers to adopt virtuous behavior based on the teachings of Islam. He played a crucial role in guiding the Ismailis in Afghanistan out of obscurity and into a respected position among other religious denominations. His legacy lives on as a wise and charitable leader who contributed to the spiritual and cultural advancement of his people.
