Alasdair Gold says that Eric Dier will stay put at Tottenham Hotspur until next summer unless an ‘amazing’ opportunity opens up for the centre-back in January.
Dier has been a fantastic servant for Spurs since joining from Sporting Lisbon nine and a half years ago but his time in North London looks set to come to an end, with his contract running out next summer.
Football Insider reported a few days ago that the latest round of contract talks between the 29-year-old and Tottenham had collapsed and the player has decided that he will exit the club as a free agent next summer.
The publication explained that although Spurs would want to listen to an offer for Dier in January, the England international would prefer to run his contract down so he has more options to choose from next summer.
However, there have been some suggestions from Italy that AS Roma could make a move for him in the winter, with the Tottenham man said to be Jose Mourinho’s top centre-back target (Corriere dello Sport via Calciomercato).
Gold has indicated that the chances of Dier departing the club in January are quite slim.
The journalist said on his YouTube channel: “If we’re assuming that Dier is going to leave next summer. Probably not in January unless the most amazing deal for him and Spurs came up that would make him forego becoming a free agent and the extra money that comes with that next summer.”

Even if we were to sign another centre-back in January, it might not be the worst idea to hang on to Dier as an emergency backup option until the end of the season as a few injuries are inevitable over the course of the campaign.
