Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews became the first player in ODIs to get out by 'Timed Out'
New Delhi: The ODI World Cup 2023 witnessed one of the rarest forms of dismissals in cricket, Angelo Mathew was given ‘Timed Out’ during the ongoing clash between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, on November 6.
Angelo Mathews came to crease but the right-handed batter came with the wrong helmet and the substitute brought the correct helmet but the umpires were not happy with Mathews’s boyish act and at the same time, Bangladesh appealed for a timeout. Bangladesh did not withdraw its appeal and Mathews was given out.
According to the rules, a batter need to stay atleast two minutes after the dismissal but Mathews leisurely walked out in the middle which in itself took some time. Had he stayed in his crease, Mathews wouldn’t been given out.
Earlier, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and opted to field first against Sri Lanka in the ICC World Cup 2023 match.
Injuries to key players have hampered Sri Lanka’s World Cup campaign, but the Island nation can still reach the semifinals with a victory over Bangladesh and New Zealand in the coming week.
Bangladesh’s only World Cup triumph came against Afghanistan in Dharamsala, and six straight losses since then have left Shakib Al Hasan’s side without a chance of reaching the semifinals.
ICC rule for timed out – “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.”
