Tommy Tuberville 'doesn't have an understanding of the English language': Alabama GOPer

Republicans in the United States Senate are finally getting fed up with the antics of Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), who has been singlehandedly blocking the promotions of military officers over his objections to the Pentagon's abortion health care policy.

Rolling Stone reports that many Republicans have grown tired of Tuberville, who also sparked a firestorm of controversy earlier this year when he decried efforts to purge the United States military of white nationalists.

One source described by Rolling Stone as a "plugged-in Alabama Republican" defended him against charges of racism, however, and implied that Tuberville lacked the intelligence to understand what white nationalism was.

"I do not believe that Tommy Tuberville is a racist at all,” they said. “I really believe that maybe he doesn’t have an understanding of the English language."

Tuberville himself spoke with Rolling Stone about that controversy, but it seems that he seems to still lack an understanding over why so many people objected when he spoke empathetically about white nationalists earlier this year, although he still insisted that he is not a racist.

“I’ve been called everything since I’ve been here from the Democrats,” he told the publication. “And they use any phrase to call you a racist. And white nationalist is a racist. But the way they use it and point at me — I’m not a racist. I’ve worked with more minorities than anybody has. And so it’s just unfortunate that they use phrases carte blanche that nobody holds them accountable to.

"But once we use something, it’s like, ‘Oh, my gosh, the world’s coming to an end.’ Yes, white nationalists are racist. But at the end of the day, you can’t frame all of us Republicans who believe in this country as racist just because, you know, we fight back against something like that.”
