Kim Kardashian has been a single mom to North, 10, Saint, 7, Chicago, 5, and Psalm, 4, since she filed for divorce from Kanye “Ye” West in Feb. 2021. While her day-to-day life looks very different from that of most single parents (she is a billionaire after all), the SKIMS founder is struggling with one heart-wrenching issue that is tough for anyone to deal with.
In this week’s episode of The Kardashians, per BuzzFeed News, the SKKN by Kim founder opened up to sister Kourtney Kardashian about the hurtful things her eldest daughter has been saying about her parenting.
“She’ll go to her dad’s. She’ll be like, ‘Dad’s the best! He has it all figured out,’” Kim recalled her daughter North telling her. “He doesn’t have a nanny, he doesn’t have a chef, he doesn’t have security, he lives in an apartment.’ And she’ll start crying: ‘Why don’t you have an apartment? I can’t believe we don’t have an apartment!’”
At another point, she revealed that North told her they make their “own food” at West’s. Kim sarcastically added, “That’s amazing that you make ramen, you know?”
Big yikes! Does Ye really not have a security or an at-home chef? It seems a little dangerous, for sure. Secondly, who wouldn’t live in a huge house or have a live-in chef if they could afford it? Sure, I’m jealous that Kim doesn’t have to prepare several meals (and snacks) all day for her kiddos, but that doesn’t mean I’m judging her for it. I would hire a chef in a heartbeat, so that is definitely a low-blow from North.
Parents who have primary custody of their kids are often seen as “the bad guy” or the “not fun one.” I’ve had many single friends complain about this very thing, and that can be so incredibly difficult to navigate. You are your child’s safe place, but they don’t realize it yet — so you become their punching bag instead.
Kourtney, who is pregnant with her fourth child with husband Travis Barker, revealed that her older three kids do the same thing to her. “They do that at Scott’s too. Like, ‘Dad has the best house, your house sucks. He has the best house, it’s not super big, the vibe’s better,’” Kourtney said about her kids Mason, 13, Penelope, 11, and Reign, 8, who she shares with ex Scott Disick. She added, “I feel like everything falls on the parent that’s more involved.”
“I do make pancakes every morning and that has been a game-changer. They love it ‘cause we’re sitting at the table and they’re happier,” Kourtney told her sister. (Hey, maybe Alexis Ohanian can teach Kim how to make pancakes fun?)
Last week, Kim opened up on her Hulu series about how having help is great, but it doesn’t negate her kids’ struggles. “Obviously, having nannies and a chef to help cook is beyond helpful,” she said, per PEOPLE. “It’s all about family and enjoying these moments. It takes a village to raise kids, but at the end of the day, your kids only want you.”
“The one thing that everyone has in common is just the amount of time that we have,” she added. “I’m raising four kids and I split my time between my work, my family, my four kids and I want to make sure that my kids have 90% of that.”
Kim seems to be doing the best she can (like all of us), and people are praising her for it. One person shared the clip from Kim and Kourtney’s chat, writing, “I used to glamorize the way my dad lived until I realized it’s easy to do whatever you want when you’re not the primary caregiver.”
Another person wrote, “Lmaooooo @ everybody in the comments talmbout ‘North wants a normal life’ like her daddy ain’t been walking around the entire western hemisphere wearing socks and football pads under a ‘police’ shirt with a woman in pantyhose holding a pillow as a blouse.”
Yesterday, North’s interview with i-D was published, where she described herself as “The Best Ever” and revealed that when she grows up she wants “to own Yeezy and SKIMS, and I want to be a business owner.”
Maybe when she realizes how much her mom does for her — while still being as present and involved as she can — North will forgive her mom for having a chef and other people to help her so much. Or, maybe not — getting thanks doesn’t come in the motherhood job description after all!
