Brits shun traditional teapot for their brew as they ‘don’t have time to wait’
THE teapot is in hot water as Brits say they no longer have time to wait for a refreshing breakfast brew.
Three in four even think it is old fashioned to set the table for breakfast — instead gulping tea and toast standing in the kitchen or on the sofa in front of the TV.
Not only are teapots and their traditional cosy covers thought to have had their day, but tablecloths and toast racks are seen as museum items too.
The verdict came in a survey of 2,000 people by British Lion Eggs. But it insisted: “Breakfast may now be more informal and less planned, but it’s still as important as ever.”
Two out of three Brits have never tried kippers and more than a third have never had black pudding, while fried bread has been dropped by health-conscious consumers.
Instead Brits are now much more likely to eat French toast, scrambled eggs and salmon or poached eggs on sourdough.
Catherine Shuttleworth, of Savvy Marketing, said: “These changes show how Britain is changing. When was the last time you even saw a tea cosy?
“I think it just shows how we live our lives 100 miles an hour these days.
“We only have time in the morning to pull a mug from the cupboard and put some water on a tea bag. It’s the need for speed, and we’re always looking to make our mornings quicker rather than have extra faff.”
She added: “That being said, in the cost of living crisis you probably would be better off turning down the heating and using a cosy to keep tea warm. Maybe it’s time to revisit why those things were used in the first place.”
The survey showed modern breakfast items tend to include cereal, cartons of juice and milk, and mugs instead of cups.
Meanwhile, brunch has become more of a mealtime — with 52 per cent now rating it higher than breakfast.
