The CHP also closed a stretch of Willow Pass Road under the highway.
CONCORD — Drivers in Contra Costa County found one of their highway routes shut down Wednesday morning.
The California Highway Patrol closed all lanes of northbound state Highway 242 near Willow Pass Road exit, and a large police presence filled the area.
The CHP also closed down a stretch of Willow Pass Road, which runs under the highway. The CHP closed the lanes about 7:45 a.m.
The agency did not provide a reason for the closure. An officer in the CHP’s traffic office said only that there was “heavy police activity.”
It was not known when the lanes would be open, and commuters were urged to use alternative routes. Highway 242 is a three-mile stretch of highway that runs from Pleasant Hill to Concord.
