Former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton said that some supporters of former President Donald Trump may need to undergo the same kinds of treatment used to help cult members.
During an interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour, Clinton discussed the seemingly unshakeable hold that Trump has over the Republican Party voting base, and she reflected on what it would take to break it.
"Sadly, so many of those extremists, those MAGA extremists, take their marching orders from Donald Trump, who has no credibility left by any measure," she said. "He's only in it for himself. He's now defending himself in civil actions, in criminal actions, and when do they break with him? You know, because at some point, you know, maybe there needs to be a formal deprogramming of the cult members, but something needs to happen."
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
Clinton said she saw little way to get the Republican base to walk away from Trump other than proving him a loser yet again in the 2024 presidential election.
"At this point I think, sadly, he will still be the nominee and we have to defeat him and we have to defeat those who are the election deniers as we did in 2020 and 2022," she said, referring to the multiple hand-picked Trump candidates who spouted falsehoods about the 2020 election and who went down in defeat during last year's midterm elections.
