US envoy urges immediate release of detained Afghan activists by Taliban
The US envoy for Afghan women’s rights in Afghanistan has called for the release of Julia Parsi, Neda Parwani, and other activists detained by the Taliban.
Rina Amiri wrote on her social media platform X that the Taliban, by depriving the population and enforcing a culture of fear and repression, cannot claim that the lives of Afghans have improved.
Earlier, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) urged the prompt release of these detained women. UNAMA stated on Friday, calling for an end to arbitrary detention by the Taliban administration and stressing the importance of providing detainees with access to medication and family visits.
Some women’s protest movements in Afghanistan have expressed concern about the situation of these two women activists in statements and have called on human rights organizations and country representatives to work for their freedom.
It’s important to highlight that the Taliban’s intelligence forces have recently arrested Julia Parsi, a female protester, along with her son on Wednesday. This incident occurred shortly after Neda Parwani’s and her child’s detention about ten days ago.
So far, the Taliban has not commented on the detention of Ms. Parsi and Ms. Parwani.
Since the return of the Taliban to power in Afghanistan, women protesters have consistently demonstrated openly in cities and hidden locations against the group’s restrictions on women’s fundamental rights.
The Taliban’s response to these protests has been widespread arrests, torture, and extensive repression.
In the past two years, the Taliban has consistently detained activists, journalists, and university professors who oppose their ideologies and policies.
Currently, Morteza Behboudi, a journalist; Rasoul Parsi, a university professor; and Matiullah Wesa, an advocate for girls’ education, are also held by the Taliban.
