Phoebe Dynevor Said This 'Fair Play' Sex Scene Inspired Her Desire For More Female-Centric Influence in Film

Netflix’s forthcoming thriller Fair Play will hit the streaming platform on Oct. 6. The movie, directed by Chloe Domont, garnered praise following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The film’s co-lead, Phoebe Dynevor, found one particular scene left an indelible impact on her, and it’s inspiring her to “create more and put more female influence out into the world.”

The Bridgerton alum spoke with Elle about a period sex scene that happens fairly early on in the film. The scene, per Elle, features Emily (Dynevor) having sex with her fiancé Luke (Alden Ehrenreich). Among the details, menstrual blood can be seen on Emily’s dress and around Luke’s mouth. But that’s all there is. Even the characters, according to Elle, seem completely unbothered by the very natural bodily fluids. People having sex on their period happens all the time, and it was something Dynevor was glad to see in the script.

“We as women know these things happen all the time, but why are we not seeing it on our screens?” Dynevor told the outlet. The actress further explained that, had the film’s director been a man, this particular detail of the scene might’ve been omitted. “‘Why would we do that? That’s not sexy’ — that’s what they would think,” she said.

For Dynevor, the period sex scene had a completely different impact. “But it draws you in and you know that this isn’t going to be your average film. When you see a film like this, it really pushes you to want to create more and put more female influence out into the world.” Sex is one of the most natural, and frankly cinematic, interactions we share with another person. Why shouldn’t there be movies and TV shows that depict these particular details? It makes it so much more real, relatable, and honest.
