Over 100,000 refugees flee to Armenia from Nagorno-Karabakh: UN
Due to recent conflicts, Armenia is facing a sudden influx of more than 100,000 refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh. The UN Refugee Agency has confirmed this significant displacement, constituting a substantial portion of the enclave’s population.
The situation demands urgent international assistance to aid the refugees in dire need.
Armenia’s Prime Minister spokesperson, Nazeli Baghdasaryan, reported on Saturday that over 100,000 residents in the Karabakh region have been displaced. Additionally, she mentioned that more than 21,000 vehicles have been transported from Karabakh to Armenia.
She claimed that this displacement was “forced” upon the people of Karabakh by Azerbaijan.
Authorities in Karabakh have reported that many residents are still moving towards Armenia.
The Republic of Karabakh is set to be dissolved on January 1st, 2024, following a decree issued by separatist President Samvel Shahramanyan, as reported by Russia’s TASS news agency on Thursday.
Shahramanyan stated that from that date onwards, the Republic of Karabakh “will no longer exist,” a move interpreted as capitulation to Azerbaijan.
On Thursday, after 32 years of unsuccessful recognition efforts, the separatist leader of Karabakh signed a decree officially dissolving the country and submitting it to Azerbaijan.
This move follows Azerbaijan’s recent military offensive, which led to the surrender and disbandment of Karabakh’s armed forces and prompted the displacement of residents in the region.
Karabakh, recognized as part of Azerbaijan under international law, has a predominantly Armenian population of 120,000. It fell out of Azerbaijani control in the early 1990s during a war and is slated for dissolution in January 2024.
