The New Haven Pride Center was the target of a bomb threat on Saturday morning.
The center, which offers a variety of programs and service for the LGBTQ+ community, said in a statement that the bomb threat came in via email.
The center thanked first responders in New Haven for working quickly to ensure the safety of their staff, members and the community.
“We want to assure everyone that both the New Haven Pride Center and the staff are safe, as are the rest of our neighbors on Orange Street,” the center said in the statement.
The center also said in their statement that although the threat against the LGBTQ+ support center was jarring, it would only strengthen their commitment to serving the community.
“While it is disheartening to witness such acts of hatred, it serves as a stark reminder that LGBTQ+ individuals across the country still face adversity and discrimination every day. However, let this be a testament to our resilience and strength,” the center said in its statement. “We refuse to be consumed by fear; instead, we choose to stand taller, united in our purpose.”
The center said that for those looking to help or contribute in the wake of the threat, the best way to do so is to continue to support their events and treat LBTQ+ folks with kindness.
The center also said they are looking for financial support to help them move to a more secure location.
“Together, we will continue to work toward building a more inclusive community that shines as a beacon of hope and love,” the center said in the statement.
The New Haven Police Department was investigating the bomb threat. The department did not immediately respond to requests for information on the threat.
