Featured Artist: Alexandra Berger Clamons
We are so excited to feature artist Alexandra Berger Clamons! Alex is a stained glass artist, whose unique and thoughtful work shines gloriously in sync with the sun-kissed glow of the Sonoran Desert. We’ve had the joy of having her at BICAS Art events in the past!
Where are you from?
I am originally from CT, went to college in Ohio, moved to VT for 1 year (2004-2005), and then relocated to Tucson in late 2005.
What got you started making art?
Art classes in elementary school! I always loved to doodle and express myself through visual representations.
What’s your artistic background? (experience, education, etc.)
I went to Oberlin College and got a double degree in Environmental Studies and Studio Art. While I was there, I began teaching myself and experimenting with glass art (lampworking). After I graduated in 2004, I worked at Simon Pearce, a high end production glass shop and then moved out to Tucson to work with Tom Philabaum. Shortly thereafter, I went to work at the Sonoran Glass School (2006-2012) and learned the rest of the glass art disciplines (fusing, slumping, mosaics, and stained glass). I set up my own stained glass studio in 2016 and became a full time stained glass artist in 2018.
Who or what are your biggest artists’ influences?
I’ve always loved Yayoi Kusama, Andy Goldsworthy, and James Turrell.
Where do you get your inspiration for your art?
I am a Certified Master Gardener in Pima County. I find inspiration in the plants, animals, and culture of Tucson and the Sonoran Desert.
What brought you to BICAS?
Fixing bikes in 2006!
How has BICAS affected you?
I love what y’all do for our community.
Why did you work with BICAS at Art Mart?
I participated in this spring’s Bicas Art Mart in March to experience a cross section of our community that I don’t engage with quite as much these days. It was lovely.
