Pundit not ‘a huge fan’ of Spurs player who just ‘runs around’ and ‘passes it sideways’
Craig Burley has identified the changes in the midfield department as a key reason behind Tottenham’s progress, admitting that he has never been a big fan of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
Hojbjerg had been a regular in Tottenham’s starting eleven under Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonino Conte, but the Dane has fallen out of favour under Ange Postecoglou.
The Australian settled on a midfield three of Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr and James Maddison as his preferred combination, and the trio have stuck up a great understanding, seemingly complementing each other well.
However, Postecoglou has demonstrated that he still trusts Hojbjerg, having brought the Dane on as a substitute in four of Tottenham’s five Premier League matches so far this season.
In an interview with Danish publication Bold two weeks ago, the 28-year-old revealed that he has had a ‘good dialogue’ with the Australian regarding his role this season, adding that he is prepared to give his best whenever opportunities come his way.
How long will Hojbjerg remain at Tottenham?
Burley believes that the benching of Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp has made a big difference to the Tottenham side.
The pundit told ESPN FC: “I have never been a huge fan of Hojbjerg. I am just not. I think he runs around a lot. Passes it sideways, and then he was playing with Skipp. I think the personnel change, especially in midfield and the addition of Maddison, it’s just a huge difference.”

Hojbjerg is a top player in the right system and even though he is not a particularly good fit for Postecoglou’s style of play, he is an excellent squad option to have, given his intelligence and experience.
