One reason Netflix has grown into the global leader in streaming is that it has developed content that can play almost anywhere. That latest example is “Who is Erin Carter?,” an English-language action series that unravels the mystery of a British teacher living in Spain who takes down some robbers with the skill of a trained secret agent.
Is she Interpol, KGB, or CIA? Even with a cast of relative unknowns, the globe-trotting action captivated viewers and propelled “Erin Carter” to the top spot in this week’s Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report for August 28 to September 3. Black and Asian households both overindexed in viewership of “Erin Carter” during the live-plus-three-day viewing window, at a 20% and 23% increase, respectively.
The Wrap Report provides an exclusive first look at the most-watched movies and TV series from the past week across both streaming and linear television sourced from viewership trends collected from Samba TV’s panel of more than 3 million households drawn from over 25 million connected TVs, balanced to the U.S. Census.
“One Piece,” Netflix’s highly stylized pirate adventure series, debuts in fifth place this week and follows a similar model to “Who is Erin Carter?” The show is an English-language adaptation of a famous Japanese manga series, similarly designed to appeal to as many audiences as possible around the world.
Both series helped Netflix hold a tight grip on the streaming charts with seven of the top 10 programs. “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah,” a teen coming-of-age comedy that also stars Adam Sandler, moved up from seventh last week to take the second slot this week. “Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones,” a docuseries that looks at communities where people live longer lives, debuted at sixth.
Netflix viewers had complicated feelings about love and relationships in the week. The second season of reality series “Ultimatum: Marry or Move On” came in eighth, followed by “Love Again,” a theatrical release from May that was recently added to Netflix. Finally, “Painkiller” remained on the chart for the third straight week, albeit falling from sixth to tenth.
The three non-Netflix entries on our chart are all holdovers from previous weeks. “Ahsoka,” the latest “Star Wars” series on Disney+, slid into third after debuting at the top in the prior week. “Special Ops: Lioness” from Paramount+ continued to hold strong. It was the fourth most-streamed show for two straight weeks and has been on the charts for five consecutive weeks. “Only Murders in the Building” from Hulu maintained its staying power as well, moving up from 10th place to seventh.
There’s an unusual entry on the linear charts: a scripted show.
You might think that the arrival of “Young Sheldon” in 10th place would signal the fall TV season’s start. Unfortunately, that’s not the case, as the seventh season of the “The Big Bang Theory” spin-off is one of many programs that has no premiere data because of the ongoing WGA strike.
Still, a rerun was popular enough to pull the CBS program onto the week’s chart, making it the first scripted series to make the linear top 10 in several weeks. Summer has otherwise been filled with reality competitions and game shows, and the latest week was no exception.
Case in point: NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” was the most watched linear program for the seventh straight week and managed to capture the second spot as well. Meanwhile, ABC’s workhorse “Wheel of Fortune” accounted for 40% of our top 10 list this week, as its Monday through Thursday airings made the list.
“American Ninja Warrior” gave NBC two more spots this week, coming in third and fifth. “Claim to Fame,” an ABC reality competition, managed to break into the top 10 with its season two finale.
