Busy Youth Pathway weekend
It is that time of year when our junior sailors get back to school and are busy with new subjects, teachers and the like. It is much the same in the club with many sailors looking for a new challenge, a different boat, and different social scene. The RCYC Youth Pathway weekend provided the perfect opportunity to do just that.
Organised by the club Coach Development Officer Tom Mapplebeck, in conjunction with the class captains, 35 junior sailors tried out a different boat.
The weekend of the 2nd-3rd of September saw the first of a number of youth pathway sessions to introduce Junior and Youth sailors to new dinghy classes within the club.
Saturday focused on single handed classes with the Topper and ILCA4 classes introducing 15 sailors to the next step in their sailing pathway. The sailors enjoyed a coach lead session where they were mentored by experienced sailors while getting a chance to try out the new boat.
Sunday saw the double handers shine, with a foggy start, 20 keen sailors arrived to test their abilities in the RS Feva, 29er and 420. The enthusiasm of the sailors made for a fantastic time on the water again learning the basics from our team of coaches and experienced sailors who were present to act as mentors for potential new recruits for the classes. The sailors who ventured out in the 29er were treated to sailing with European 29er Champions Ben O’Shaughnessy and Alana Twomey.
The autumn and winter training programs start over the next couple of weeks in all the classes, as we prepare for the 2024 season of domestic and international events.
