Iraq agrees to disarm and relocate Kurdish militants: Iran

Iran and Iraq have officially agreed to the disarmament and relocation of “armed terrorist groups” operating within Iraq’s Kurdistan region, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said on Monday, emphasising that the groups will undergo disarmament and be relocated in the upcoming month.

“An agreement has been struck between Iran and Iraq, in which Iraq has committed to disarm armed separatists and terrorist groups present in its territory, close their bases, and relocate them to other locations before September 19,” ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said at a weekly briefing as cited by Reuters.

As per the media report, Kurdish groups are set to have all their weapons and military equipment confiscated. Additionally, the Kurdish fighters and their families will be relocated to the western regions of Iraq in the upcoming days.

The report noted a six-month timeline for the agreement’s execution. September 19 is the deadline to conclude the Kurdish militants’ group issue and withdraw from the Iran-Iraq border areas.

Tehran, Baghdad, and Iraqi Kurdistan have not issued official comments or confirmations.
Iran has consistently accused Iraq’s independent northern Kurdish area of sheltering terrorist groups responsible for attacks on the country. The Revolutionary Guards have frequently targeted these bases in response.

In September of last year, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards launched missile and drone strikes on militant targets in Iraq’s Kurdish region, resulting in the deaths of 13 individuals as reported by local authorities.

Iraq’s foreign ministry expressed strong condemnation of the attacks. Meanwhile, Iran’s elite military and security force affirmed their intent to persist in targeting what they referred to as terrorist elements within the region, Reuters said.
