IT was a film four years in the making and overcame the uncertainties of the pandemic to finally make it to the big screen back last month.
But Tom Cruise’s latest Mission: Impossible instalment, which is among one of the most costly films of all time, has made less of an impact at the box office than he would have hoped.
And insiders who worked on the seventh film in the franchise told me Tom and his crew have been left with more than a little peeved due to the phenomenal success of Margot Robbie’s Barbie — which has taken almost £1billion.
A source said: “Tom’s Mission: Impossible seven was hard earned and overcame so many hurdles to make it into the cinema.
“But there is a feeling among the crew that they fought hell and high water to get it out only for Barbie to come along and totally overshadow it.
“Tom’s Mission: Impossible films are normally the most talked-about releases but Margot has eclipsed them.
“It’s a really hard time in Hollywood right now so no one is knocking Barbie’s wins, it’s just left a bit of a sour taste in some mouths.”
I can only imagine.
The latest Mission: Impossible flick has still made an impressive £449million at the box office since it was released.
But given it cost a reported £200million to make, with almost another £1million tacked on for promoting it, the film has most certainly been outdone by Barbie, which is already being spun up for a sequel.
Still, given Tom’s Top Gun reboot last year made £1.1billion worldwide, at least Tom still has something to smile about.
Work on Ethan Hawk’s eighth mission was well under way until it was scuppered by the on-going strikes in Hollywood, meaning no work on the production will resume until it’s people go back to work.
The film had been touted for release in July next year.
But given it has already been pushed back by a month, I feel like Tom might be getting a sense of déjà vu.
