“Remember, kid, there’s heroes, and there’s legends. Heroes get remembered, but legends never die.” While that is a famous line from the baseball movie “The Sandlot,” it can be used in all sports. Legends, indeed, never die. Tremaine Edmunds wants to be the next great Linebacker for the Chicago Bears.
Sure, it’s a lofty goal. Just reading the names of some of the greatest linebackers to play in Chicago, brings chills to the avid Bears fan:
Bill George, Dick Butkus, Doug Buffone, Mike Singletary, Otis Wilson, Wilbur Marshall, Brian Urlacher, and Lance Briggs. No other team in the NFL can list more great linebackers. Now, Edmunds wants to add his name to this prestigious list.
Edmunds was highly recruited. Edmunds committed to play football at Virginia Tech over various offers from Cincinnati, East Carolina, Hampton, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, USC, and Virginia. After three years, he chose to forego his Senior year, opted to enter the NFL draft, and was selected in the first round in the 2018 draft.
When the 2023 NFL free agency period began in Mid-March, Bears’ GM Ryan Poles jumped at the opportunity to land Edmunds. Tremaine quickly impressed coaches and fellow players with his speed and how seamlessly he assimilated into the Chicago defensive scheme.
Edmunds’ size and speed are reminiscent of long-time MLB Brian Urlacher. Brian was 6′ 4″ and weighed 258 lbs. His 40-yard time was 4.57 seconds. Tremaine’s stats are 6′ 4 1/2″, 253 lbs. And his 40-yard time is 4.54 seconds. If he can match the play of Urlacher, he will indeed reach his goal of adding his name to the long list of linebacker excellence his new team is renowned for.
Legends, indeed, never die.
