SANTA CLARA — Monday marked the 49ers’ first practice in full pads at training camp, and it also brought Brock Purdy’s third session after back-to-back days to rest his surgically repaired arm. Here is how he and the three other quarterbacks fared:
Arguably his best pass evoked memories of last season: He spotted Christian McCaffrey racing in one-on-one coverage against Fred Warner and completed a 30-yard dime. Next snap, Purdy threw to Elijah Mitchell, who got clothesline tackled by Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, and three scrums promptly broke out between the offense and defense.
Purdy’s worst pass was intercepted by Dre Greenlaw, after it floated 20 yards (and short) of George Kittle. Purdy’s final pass (12-of-17) saw him connect with Deebo Samuel, while safety Tashaun Gipson Sr. came on a blitz.
How has Purdy been in the huddle upon his return? “Same as it was before. I don’t think he’s changed,” guard Aaron Banks said. “He has a very level head and comes in very confident, day in and day out.”
Every rep seems to help Purdy knock off understandable rust. His first dropback in team drills saw the ball tumble from his hand before a full throw, and something similar happened later. Further clarity on his comeback plan: practice two days in a row, then rest two consecutive days (one is a normal day off, one is conditioning on the side while practice goes on without him.)
Camp totals in full-team drills: 21-of-29
Lance waited a cycle before he entered for the second round of second-team reps, and his first throw was on the mark to Danny Gray for 20 yards against Sam Womack’s coverage. Lance (10-of-12) completed four passes to Ray-Ray McCloud. His incompletions came on a miscommunication with Jordan Mason and then a throw-away on a play-action pass pressured by Kerry Hyder Jr.
Camp totals: 23-of-35
After Sunday’s most impressive session of camp, Darnold’s encore wasn’t as riveting. His initial pass, to Samuel, got broken up by Qwuantrezz Knight. Three consecutive completions went to rookie Ronnie Bell as he surfaced in his first camp. Darnold had the day’s only scramble (two, in fact) by a quarterback. He took over after the three-scrum stoppage as most everyone cooled off (except for Dre Greenlaw and Jennings).
Camp totals: 16-of-25
Only nine snaps came Allen’s way on third-string duty, and he completed 1-of-4 passes, two of which were batted down at the line by Darryl Johnson and another resulted in a pass interference call on Knight.
