A constable with India’s Railway Protection Force (RPF) was arrested after he shot four people dead on a train near Mumbai.

Authorities said that Chetan Kumar, the accused, killed three passengers and a senior RPF official.

“Four casualties, including the ASI, have been reported in the firing incident inside the Jaipur-Mumbai Central Superfast Express (12956). The accused has been arrested. DCP North GRP has been informed,” the RSF said.

In addition to trying to identify the dead passengers, they also said that they are investigating the motive and cause of the incident.

The incident occurred aboard a train from Jaipur in the western state of Rajasthan to Mumbai in the Indian state of Maharashtra at about 05:30 local time (midnight GMT).

An RPF statement said that Mr Kumar shot Tikaram Meena, an assistant sub-inspector, before shooting three other passengers.

“Constable Chetan Singh fired on Party Incharge ASI Tikaram Meena from his ARM Rifle and one unknown Passenger at Coach No B 5 and then fired on two other unknown Passenger in Coach No S 6 and the Pantry car attached to the train. At about 6:18, the train reached Borivali, and GRP and RPF officers and staff retrieved four dead bodies. The passengers are yet to be identified. Constable Chetan has been detained, and his ARM recovered,” said an official statement released by the RPF.

Four RPF members, including the accused, were allegedly accompanying the Jaipur-Mumbai Central Express on Monday as it departed from Surat station in Gujarat, according to railway officials.

“The incident is very sad,” Neeraj Verma, general manager of Western Railways, told reporters. “We have not received any information about any argument between the RPF constable and the assistant sub-inspector.”
