Dozens of Afghan women protested against the beauty salon ban on Wednesday after the Taliban ordered their closure across the country.
According to reports, security forces dispersed the protest with shotguns into the air, tasers and fire hoses.
At least 60 women participated in the protests, which attracted the attention of security forces as they were a rare event in Afghanistan.
The Taliban authorities announced earlier this month that they would give all salons in Afghanistan a month to close their shops and stop businesses in the county, raising concerns among international human rights organizations about the impact of female entrepreneurs.
Several videos and pictures show that the women were seen carrying signs that read “food,” Justice,” and “work.”
“Do not take my bread and water,” read one of the demonstrators’ banners on Butcher Street, a popular area for beauty parlours.
“We wanted our right to work and the cancellation of the order. However, the Taliban responded with water cannons and aerial firing and took away a few girls,” a beauty artist told local media outlets.
Since taking control in August 2021, the Taliban administration has forbidden girls and women from attending high schools and universities, as well as parks, amusement parks, and gyms. They have also issued orders for them to cover up in public.
