Pakistan, Tajikistan Face Security Threats from Afghanistan, Says Asif
Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif on Tuesday in a meeting with his Tajikistani counterpart said both Tajikistan and Pakistan face common security threats emanating from Afghanistan.
Tajik Defence Minister, Sherali Mirzo called on Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif and discussed bilateral defense cooperation.
Khawaja Asif said that Pakistan will continue to provide assistance in intelligence capacity building and sharing of technical expertise with the Tajik Armed Forces.
While appreciating Tajikistan’s rule in restoring peace and stability in the region, Khawaja Asif said that Afghanistan issues should be solved peacefully, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan.
Contrary to the Taliban’s claims that terrorist groups are not posing threats against the security of other countries from Afghan soil, Tajikistan, Pakistan and other neighboring countries are seriously concerned about the presence of insurgent groups including the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) in Afghanistan.
Over the past couple of months, Pakistani media have repeatedly reported TTP attacks on Pakistani security forces. Islamabad claimed that TTP has launched these attacks using their hideouts in Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, Pakistan asked Tajikistan to cooperate in enhancing its intelligence capabilities and capabilities to eliminate security threats.
In return, Tajik Defense Minister assured his government’s commitment and pledged to work with Pakistan to strengthen bilateral ties.
