British Charge D’Affaires Travels to Kabul, Meets Muttaqi

Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday announced that Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi met with the British Charge d’Affaires to Afghanistan Robert Charterton Dixon and discussed stocks of issues.

While thanking the United Kingdom for not supporting the armed opposition groups, Minister Muttaqi called on the UK to have constructive engagement with Afghanistan’s ruling regime.

Minister Muttaqi further added the UK should not formulate its policies regarding Afghanistan based on media reports and asked the UK to pursue a pragmatic approach towards the Taliban.  

As a member of the UN Security Council, Britain has repeatedly stressed in the council’s meetings that Taliban’s policies, especially the violation of women’s rights, have isolated this group.

In June, the British Ambassador to the UN in connection with the critical report of the United Nations Special Rapporteur to the Human Rights Council, said that the Taliban will not be recognized by the international community if they continue oppressing women and girls.

Barbara Woodward stressed if the current situation continues, sanctions against the Taliban will remain in place and development aid will be stopped.

For his part, Robert Charterton Dixon considered the Taliban’s steps to reduce narcotics and establish stability in Afghanistan to be effective, the Taliban foreign ministry stated. However, the chargé d’affaires of the British embassy has not yet commented on this meeting.

Muttaqi demanded that the Taliban should access the Afghan embassy in Britain, expressing hope to resume consular services in London to solve the problems of Afghans living in Britain.
