Airport worker who died after being ‘ingested’ into plane engine pictured
An employee at San Antonio International Airport was killed on Friday when he was ‘ingested’ by a plane’s jet engine, authorities said.
The gruesome death occurred on Friday night, when Delta Flight 1111 landed in San Antonio after an almost five-hour flight from Los Angeles.
Around 10.25pm, as the flight was taxiing to the gate, an airport worker was ‘ingested’ into the plane’s jet engine, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said.
The victim was identified by the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office as David Renner, 27. He was killed by blunt and sharp force injuries from the engine.
Renner’s death was later ruled a suicide.
The NTSB said they would not be opening an investigation into the incident after the findings from the medical examiner’s office. ‘There were no operational safety issues with either the airplane or the airport,’ the NTSB said in a statement.
Renner worked for Unifi Aviation, the largest aviation ground services provider in the United States. The company employees about 20,000 people at airports across the country.
Unifi CEO Gautam Thakkar said the company has experienced ‘a very tough few days’ after Renner’s death.
‘It has been said far too many times before, but we truly do not know what people are going through or how much pain they may be in,’ Thakkar said in a post on LinkedIn. ‘David’s death is yet another stark reminder to be kind and patient with one another. May his memory be a comfort to all who knew and loved him.’
‘We are heartbroken and grieving the loss of an aviation family member’s life in San Antonio,’ Delta Airlines said in a statement. ‘Our hearts and full support are with their family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time.’
