Brit, 29, dies after falling unconscious on flight to Caribbean with his mum
A British man has died after he fell unconscious while on a flight to a Caribbean island with his mum, it has been reported.
The 29-year-old became ‘unresponsive’ on his journey to Antigua last Thursday, local media said.
The British Airways flight, on a Boeing 777, was grounded at VC Bird International Airport and he was rushed to hospital.
Emergency room medics tried to revive him but he was declared dead at 6.37 pm.
Doctors called the police but investigators reportedly found ‘no marks of violence on the body’ and do not suspect any foul play.
The man’s 65-year-old mum is believed to have told officers her son suffered from several serious illnesses, such as hypotension, muscular dystrophy and ulcerative colitis.
She said his conditions had led him to be hospitalised multiple times, including in the nearby dual-island nation of St. Kitts and Nevis.
He had reportedly spent five days in intensive care in the country, where he was diagnosed with sepsis and blood poisoning.
The man was treated with IV fluid, antibiotics and insulin but discharged himself from hospital.
This is something he has done repeatedly in the past, police were told.
The mum said her son was struggling with dehydration and was losing weight quickly before he died.
Officials have granted the family permission for his body to be moved to a funeral home in London.
British Airways has confirmed to The Sun that there was a ‘medical emergency’. Metro.co.uk has contacted the airline for any further information.
Antigua police said in a statement: ‘We are investigating this incident like we investigate all incidents of this nature.
‘However, foul play is not suspected at this stage and we will be working with the family and will be cooperating with them fully.
‘We offer our condolences to the mother and the rest of the family.
‘Imagine coming to our beautiful island and ending up like this. It is so sad. Our sympathy is with the family.’
