Report: Tottenham ‘miles apart’ from meeting PL club’s valuation of player 

Football Insider have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur remain ‘miles apart’ from meeting Leicester City’s valuation of James Maddison.

It was reported just days after Ange Postecoglou’s arrival at Spurs that the Australian had made Maddison his priority target (Telegraph), with Newcastle United also thought to be keen on snapping up the attacking midfielder (Sky Sports).

Over the last few days, there have been some positive updates regarding Tottenham’s pursuit of the England international.

Journalist Alex Crook said on talkSPORT Breakfast (14/06 at 9:50 am) that Tottenham are at the front of the queue for Maddison, who prefers a move to North London over a switch to the North East.

Meanwhile, journalist Dean Jones said on The Done Deal Show that Spurs are well-placed to get a deal for the 26-year-old over the line since the club have a good relationship with the intermediaries overseeing the player’s sale.

Spurs still a long way short of Maddison price tag

However, Football Insider have now suggested that as things stand, the Lilywhites have not come anywhere close to meeting the Foxes’ valuation of the player.

It is suggested that Leicester are holding out for a fee of £50m for Maddison, which Spurs have not shown any inclination to pay.

So, the deal to take the former Norwich man to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is far from imminent at the moment.

The report adds that like Ange Postecoglou’s men, Newcastle United also are not willing to meet Leicester’s valuation of Maddison, with both clubs hoping to land him on a ‘cut-price fee’ as the window drags on.

Leicester would perhaps be hoping that more clubs enter the race for Maddison over the coming weeks but with the player having just one year left on his contract, they would likely have to lower their valuation as the window drags on. 

Tottenham should perhaps test the water by offering around £40m for the midfielder as the Foxes might perhaps be keen to offload players quickly and rebuild the squad ahead of their return to the Championship.
