Driver pulled from crashed car seconds before it ‘exploded’ into a fireball
A suspected thief cheated death when cops pulled him from a crashed car – seconds before it exploded into a fireball.
Emergency crews dashed to Alderminster Road, in Coventry, at 7pm on Tuesday after a car smashed into a house and a telegraph pole.
Police officers dragged the driver from the stolen motor moments before it erupted into flames.
The driver was treated at the scene before being arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle.
He was taken to hospital as a precaution where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Witness Tim Worwood, 36, took pictures of the dramatic incident on his phone.
He said: ‘It all happened so fast. One minute the street was quiet and the next a car came screaming past out of control.
‘It struck a house and a telegraph pole. It was a miracle no one was hurt.
‘Emergency services pulled the driver out of the car but literally moments later it exploded.
‘There were flames and smoke billowing into the sky.’
A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: “We were called to Alderminster Road at its junction with Ladbrook Road in Coventry shortly before 7pm after a car crashed into a house and telegraph pole.
‘Our colleagues from West Midlands Fire Service and West Midlands Ambulance Service assisted us as we dealt with the incident.
;The driver was pulled from the vehicle and given treatment at the scene before being arrested on suspicion of the theft of a motor vehicle and taken to hospital with injuries which are not life-threatening. No one else was hurt.’
West Midlands Ambulance Service sent three ambulances to the scene.
A spokesperson said: ‘Upon arrival we found a man who was the driver of the car.
‘He had sustained serious injuries that were not life threatening.
‘He received treatment at the scene and was conveyed to University Hospital Coventry for further assessment.’
