Harry Redknapp reveals what former PL star once told him about Postecoglou

Harry Redknapp has revealed that former Everton star Tim Cahill waxed lyrical about Ange Postecoglou several years ago and that he has followed the Australian’s coaching career closely ever since.

Postecoglou created history on Tuesday by becoming the first man from Down Under to coach in the Premier League.

As one would expect from someone from that part of the world, he had an unconventional route to the top, having had to prove his chops in the A-League, with the Australian national team and in the J-League before finally getting a chance in European football.

There is understandably some scepticism among fans and pundits in the Premier League about Postecoglou, given his lack of experience at the highest level of the game.

However, many articles over the past 24 hours, including one from The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare, have explained how every player who has worked with the 57-year-old has nothing but high praise for his unwavering belief in his principles of play and his man-management techniques.

Harry Redknapp revealed that Cahill first spoke to him in glowing terms about Postecoglou many years ago.

When asked about Tottenham’s new appointment, the former Spurs manager told talkSPORT: “Yeah, I like it! I met him out in Australia and Timmy Cahill, just chatting to him before the game, he said, ‘Our manager is fantastic.’ I said, ‘really?’ He said, ‘Harry, he is top drawer!’

“That was it. I’d never heard of him at that time, he was managing somewhere out in Japan and also the Australian national team.

“But Timmy Cahill is no fool, he said he’s brilliant. It stuck with me and I’ve watched how he has done at Celtic, he’s been brilliant. I like him!”

There is no doubt that there is a big element of risk involved with Postecoglou’s appointment, given his lack of experience at the top level.

However, as we found out with our last two appointments in Mourinho and Conte, even proven managerial appointments come with risks.

The one pleasing thing about the appointment is that Levy and the Spurs hierarchy have stayed true to their promise of returning to the club’s DNA and hiring someone who prioritises aggressive, attacking football.
