Whitby Skipper’s Lock Knife
Whitby is a British firm originating not in Whitby, but Kendal in the Lake District. Its Skipper’s Lock Knife features a stainless serrated blade, locking marlinspike and shackle key. Everything a sailor requires in a compact package. £24.95, whitbyandco.co.uk
Opinel No8
The Opinel No 8 features a very strong single blade that is 2.5mm thick and features an integral shackle key. There’s no marlinspike, but the handle is water resistant and also features a pea-less whistle, which could prove invaluable in an emergency. The blade is made out of Sandvik 12C27 modified stainless steel. It is anti-corrosive thanks to the addition of chrome. £25, opinel.com
Captain Currey Lockspike ‘Captain’

Spyderco’s Atlantic Salt has long been recognised as one of the finest sailor’s knives out there and that is reflected in the price. Stylish, lightweight and compact, the unusually-shaped blade is designed to prevent it stabbing you in the foot if dropped. Wichard Offshore
French company Wichard has been making knives for over 50 years and its Offshore knife is a distillation of all that knowledge. Ibberson Heavy Duty
The Ibberson Heavy Duty is made of stainless steel and is pleasingly chunky in the hand.
