Chad Ramey made a painfully relatable nonuple bogey at the Memorial Tournament
There’s not a single golfer in the history of the sport who hasn’t hit the most beautiful drive in their life only to completely botch the rest of the hole. It’s part of what makes the game so infuriatingly addictive.
Chad Ramey is not like most golfers. The PGA Tour veteran is far more accomplished. He’s made more than $2 million in his nine-year career with three top 10 finishes and a victory at the 2022 Corales Puntacana Championship.
He’s not the best golfer in the world, but he is among the top 200.
I mention this all because anyone can screw up on a hole and for the majority of us that doesn’t come during a PGA tournament. And make no mistake, after his horrific experience on No. 9 at Muirfield Village Golf Club on Thursday, Ramey is certainly one of us.
The 30-year-old Mississippi State product scored a nonuple bogey (nine-over-par) after hitting his tee shot 293 yards down the middle of the fairway. This is truly the stuff of nightmares.

Ramey started his Thursday round on the back nine, which made this his final hole of the day. He walked up to the tee box seven-over-par and running out of opportunities to move closer to the projected cut line at three-over. But after hitting his driver his tank hit empty and then some.
His second shot went right in the water. So did his next one. And the one after that. And one more for good measure. When he finally got onto the green, it took three putts to clean up for 13.

Whatever drink was waiting for him in the clubhouse after walking off the course was well earned.
Ramey bounced back quite nicely on Friday with a round of 74. But the damage was done from his 88 on Thursday. Sitting at 18-over-par after 36 holes left Ramey in last place by six strokes.
He was a long-shot coming into the week (+9000 Top 5), but Ramey leaves an endearing mark on the fans who watched his performance. It’s never been easier to relate to a pro golfer.
