Avalanche Kills 11 Members of Nomadic Tribe in Northern Pakistan
At least 11 individuals were killed when an avalanche struck members of a nomadic tribe as they crossed a mountainous region in northern Pakistan, According to the country’s disaster management department on Saturday.
The report also said that another 13 people were injured in the incident, which occurred in the district of the Gilgit-Baltistan region bordering Kashmir, Shounter top Pass, on Friday, Reuters reported.
The department said the injured people, including a child, had been taken to the nearby hospital for treatment and were in critical condition.
“Such incidents are rising in Pakistan due to the impact of climate change,” Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said in a statement.
Pakistan is one of the top 10 countries most in danger from natural disasters due to climate change, having recently experienced record monsoon rains and glacier melt in the northern Himalayas.
Pakistani Prime Minister Sharif urged the international community to carry out its duty and protect developing countries from the adverse effects of climate change. These countries are currently undergoing economic hardship.
Meanwhile, such incident is expected in Gilgit-Baltistan due to being mountainous and snowy in the region, and most of the nomadic people take their goats’ herd to the high grassland of Kashmir valley.
