A three-alarm blaze caused by improperly disposed smoking materials at a multi-family home in Manchester on Friday displaced 14 people, fire officials said.
The fire, located at 22 West St., was reported shortly before 5 a.m. and prompted mutual aid from firefighters in East Hartford, according to the Manchester Fire Department.
Everyone in the four-family home was able to make it out of the house safely.
One firefighter and a resident were taken to an area hospital following the blaze, though fire officials said the resident’s condition was not related to the fire and the firefighter was likely suffering from exhaustion.
No other injuries were reported.
The blaze caused extensive damage to the outside of the home and extended into the attic, according to Manchester Fire Chief Daniel French. The home is an older structure with cedar siding underneath the vinyl, he said.
The fire left the home uninhabitable, displacing 14 residents. The American Red Cross is assisting those who have been affected.
Fire officials said improperly disposed smoking materials outside of the home caused the blaze.
