Beaches are not to be used as dumping grounds.
General manager at the National Conservation Commission (NCC) Ryan Als made that point as he pleaded with individuals not to illegally dispose of their waste at beaches across the country.
“We get a lot of problems. People come to the beach and dump stuff and they say ‘NCC will pick it up’. Then we have persons who dump their items in the closest possible place, away from their residence, and then we have to respond.
“A lot of the time we get people dumping old furniture – stoves, fridges and bulk waste – instead of taking it to the landfill as they should. All of those are challenges that we face,” Als said.
He made those comments yesterday after some beachgoers informed the Weekend Nation about a pile of waste that appeared to be household garbage which was near the beach at Fitts Village, St James.
In addition to the dumping becoming an eyesore, Als said the waste could be a threat to the turtles that are known to the area. (TG)
