$717 Million Needed to Provide Life-Saving Aid to Afghans: UN
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that Afghans will face unprecedentedly high levels of challenges including food insecurity, lack of water, diseases and natural disasters in the coming months.
UN OCHA in a tweet said that the organization needs roughly $717.4 until June 2023, to provide essential aid to vulnerable families across Afghanistan.
OCHA states that $450 million of the total fund will be spent on providing food and agricultural facilities for people in Afghanistan.
Furthermore, much of the funds will be invested in providing safe drinking water and healthcare services in remote rural parts of the country.
This comes as the volume of international humanitarian aid to Afghanistan has decreased in the past months. This is partly due to the caretaker regime’s reluctance to protect and respect the rights of Afghan women, girls, religious groups and ethnic minorities.
According to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) latest assessment of 2022, data estimating 34 million Afghans were living below the poverty line.
Since the return of the Taliban to power in August 2021, poverty, hunger, security and economic challenges have led to a humanitarian crisis, making the living conditions further complicated for ordinary people who are struggling for survival across the country.
