Man Utd make 'direct contact' to sign 'important target' for Erik ten Hag - report

Manchester United have made ‘direct contact’ with Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot over a free transfer this summer, according to Calciomercato.

The Red Devils were heavily interested in signing the France international last summer but a deal did not materialise due to personal terms.

United were able to negotiate a transfer fee with the Bianconeri but refused to meet the midfielder’s salary demands of €10 million per year.

Rabiot has since had a good season with the Turin giants and it now appears United are in the back in the hunt for his signature on a free transfer.

His current deal expires on June 30 and it is reported that United have made ‘direct contact’ to sign him.

However, United are not alone in the pursuit. Calciomercato claim that Newcastle United, Liverpool and Bayern Munich are also in the mix for Rabiot.

Rabiot would be a quality signing

United’s move for Rabiot raised eyebrows during last summer’s transfer window. He had a difficult 2021/22 season and some fans were not pleased.

The Red Devils eventually ended up signing Casemiro from Real Madrid instead, but they appear keen on landing Rabiot on a free transfer this summer.

The Frenchman has had a superb turnaround in his fortunes this season. He has been one of Juventus’ top performers with 11 goals and four assists.

Rabiot spoke about his Premier League dream during the World Cup and we won’t be surprised if United bring him to Old Trafford during the off-season.

The big question is whether they would be willing to meet his demands this time. There is no transfer fee but Rabiot may want a sizeable signing-on bonus.

United boss Erik ten Hag seems determined to sign Rabiot and has identified him as ‘an important target‘.
