Last chance to catch ‘Sports In Paradise’ exhibit in Delray Beach
A free outdoor display featuring over 300 sports images related to Delray Beach wraps up on May 31.
The exhibit at Cason Cottage at the Delray Beach Historical Society, 3 NE First St., in Delray Beach, takes a nostalgic look back at local school sports athletes in basketball, football, tennis and track, many of whom went on to national and international fame, at both Carver High School and eventually Atlantic High School.
Visitors can see why Delray Beach has always been a sportsman’s paradise because of sports such as chess, speedboat racing, fishing, hunting, tennis, polo, surfing, water skiing, lawn bowling and more, ranging from the 1800s to current day.
“During the pandemic, we were forced to close our buildings,” Winnie Diggans Edwards, executive director of the Delray Beach Historical Society, said of the genesis of the outdoor displays. “We were trying to find a way of bringing our history outside, so for seven months we had an exhibit like this with over 1,000 images and it went all around the entire campus.
“It was the longest linear history exhibit in the world,” she said. “It was the entire history of Delray from the 1800s to 1987…every topic. Ninety-five percent of those images came from the archive and many of these were in the archive already. We just scan them, laminate them and add captions to then hang them. The original photos are still in the archives.”
