India, China Military Officials Meet To Discuss Border Issues

On Tuesday, the senior military commanders of India and China began the latest round of talks to resolve the issues along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the de facto border in eastern Ladakh.

An Indian Major General and his Chinese counterpart met for a full day at the Daulat Beg Oldi (DBO) campsite along the LAC.

The commanders of the Indian Army and the PLA regularly have various rounds of consultations to address concerns throughout LAC and improve bilateral ties between the two countries.

Since the Galwan Valley standoff in May 2020, which led to more than 24 Indian soldiers’ live claims and several Chinese troops, diplomatic relations has deteriorated.

Since then, the two countries have toughened their stand as the defence ministers’ level bilateral talks on resolving the standoff in eastern Ladakh.

The Indian Defense minister, Rajnath Singh, had told his Chinese Counterpart, Li Shangfu, that peace at borders was critical to developing relations between the neighbouring countries.

 “The two Ministers had frank discussions about the developments in the India-China border areas and bilateral relations. The Raksha Mantri categorically conveyed that development of relations between India and China is premised on the prevalence of peace and tranquillity at the borders,” said the Ministry of Defense of India in a statement, local media quoted.

Meanwhile, the Chines Defense Minister had participated in the recent Shanghai defence minister meeting in India, stressing to address the current border issues between the two neighbours.

Apart from the border issues between India and China, several other geopolitical differences exist, including power competition, particularly in South Asia, the Pakistan factor and global politics.
