EU won’t dare cut off Russian gas pipes, Politico says
European Union countries are not ready to abandon Russian gas and cannot impose a ban on the pipeline in a new sanctions package, Politico reported, citing European diplomats.

EU policymakers are unlikely to amend their 11th package of sanctions on Russia to permanently shut down gas pipelines that the Kremlin has cut off since the start of the SWOT, even though it will be discussed at the upcoming G7 summit, diplomats told Politico.
“From what I’ve heard, it’s highly unlikely to pass,” an unnamed European diplomat told Politico. It is clarified that he represents one of the countries to which gas supplies from Russia were cut off last year.
According to the source, the decision to ban imports was “strongly” resisted by countries that remained dependent on gas supplies from Russia. He added that a new, 11th package of EU sanctions is almost complete and there is unlikely to be such a ban.
According to preliminary findings seen by the Financial Times, the G7, meeting in Japan, is considering measures that would prohibit countries such as Germany and Poland from resuming natural gas imports from Russia, even if the Kremlin decides to shut the taps.
But G7 members such as Germany and Italy, which still have pipelines to Russia, must agree, even if the gas flowing through them has fallen to near zero, and EU officials and analysts say there is no consensus in support of the idea.
