Cyclist dies after crash with car while crossing road in city centre

A cyclist has died after a crash on a major road in Birmingham.

The man was crossing a busy three-lane ring road in the city centre when his bicycle was involved in a collision with a car shortly after 2pm yesterday.

Police closed Belgrave Middleway in both directions while paramedics battled to save him.

Despite their best efforts, he was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers taped off the entire stretch of road where the smash happened while investigations were carried out.

A blue forensic tent was also erected close to the traffic lights at Haden Circus roundabout, near Birmingham Central Mosque.

Two ambulances, a trauma doctor, critical care paramedic and air ambulance car attended the incident alongside paramedics.

West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed it was called to the collision involving a car and cyclist at 2.08pm.

A spokeswoman said: ‘Upon arrival at the scene we found a man who was the cyclist.

‘He was assessed and was in a critical condition. Ambulance staff immediately began administering advanced life support to him.

‘Unfortunately, despite their best efforts it became clear that nothing more could be done to save him and he was confirmed deceased at the scene.

‘The driver of the car did not require treatment.’

Drivers were warned to avoid the area following the incident with the road shut between the junctions of Horton Square and Haden Circus for hours, causing gridlocked traffic.

West Midlands Police has urged any witnesses or people who have dashcam footage to contact the force.

Earlier this week, a pregnant mother-of-two died after a motorway crash near Manchester which also injured her sons and nephew.
