Report plays down any prospect of sporting director joining Tottenham

Any prospect of Rui Pedro Braz leaving Benfica to join Tottenham Hotspur has been downplayed by Portuguese news outlet A Bola.

The Mirror reported yesterday that the Benfica sporting director is one of the names in contention to replace Fabio Paratici as managing director of football at Tottenham.

Paratici resigned from his role in north London last month after losing an appeal in Italy against his 30-month ban from the game rejected by Italy’s top sports court.  The Italian had initially stepped back from his position at Spurs on March 31 following his ban made worldwide by FIFA.

Pedro Braz has enjoyed a successful time as Benfica‘s sporting director where he has helped sign relatively unknown talents before selling them on for huge fees.

Benfica had benefitted financially from the £85m sale of Darwin Nunez to Liverpool last summer, while they pocketed a further £107m when Enzo Fernandez moved to Chelsea for a British transfer record fee (Daily Mail).

The report claims despite the reports from England suggesting he could be on his way to N17, he is fully focused on continuing the job at hand with the Portuguese giants.

Tottenham need to move fast to get a new managing director of football in place if it is correct that it is holding up any potential appointment of a head coach.

We are in the final month of the season and the club need to make up for lost time, what top player in their right mind would be currently considering a move to Tottenham where there is no Champions League football or a manager who they know they will be playing under.

Someone of Braz’s ability to unearth future talent is exactly what we need at this stage since we’re hardly unlikely to be attracting the cream of the footballing crop while Europa League football or worse, is on offer.
