Youth the catalyst for important change in the Commonwealth says president

Encouraging young people to bring about change on important issues is a priority, according to President Nicos Christodoulides during a debate at a Commonwealth event in London on Friday.

Christodoulides and other Commonwealth heads of state participated in a debate on “The Future of the Commonwealth with a focus on Youth” on the sidelines of the coronation ceremony of King Charles III.

He welcomed the 2023 Commonwealth Declaration, which is the Commonwealth’s Year of Youth, noting that young people can bring about change and be an important and valuable investment for the future.

“It is our obligation to give young people the opportunity so that they can bring about change on important issues,” Christodoulides said.

Referring to the importance of the programmes for youth, the president noted that their operation should be evaluated and, taking into account the relevant results, their possible extension should be decided.

In his intervention in the discussion, Christodoulides said that Cyprus has always been an active member, underlining also that cooperation on issues of common interest among its members strengthens the promotion and consolidation of peace, security and human rights, especially of young people and women.

Finally, he said that more tools and policies should be considered aimed at further empowering youth.

“Our goal should be to create a dynamic, united and responsible youth of today, something that will pave the way for future generations as well. By investing in our youth, we are investing in our future. By empowering our young people, we encourage their involvement and engagement in political, social and economic events,” he stressed.

During the event, Christodoulides spoke privately with heads of state or government of the member states, including British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who thanked him for Cyprus’ assistance in the evacuation of, among others, British citizens from Sudan.

Christodoulides also had a brief conversation with King Charles III.
