CT psychologist agrees to pay $658K to resolve allegations she and husband defrauded Medicare, Medicaid programs

A Connecticut psychologist has agreed to pay the state and federal governments more than $600,000 to settle allegations that she received payments from the Medicare and Medicaid programs for services submitted by her husband, who is also a licensed psychologist, that were never performed.

Officials from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut and the Connecticut Office of the Attorney General on Friday announced the civil settlement agreed to by Dr. Evelyn Llewellyn. She will pay just over $658,000 to settle the allegations that span from November 2014 to February 2020, officials said

“Misuse of public health care dollars undermines public trust and depletes vital support for patients in need. I thank our Government Program Fraud Section and our partners in state government and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for their diligent work each and every day to protect the integrity of our Medicare and Medicaid programs,” Connecticut Attorney General William Tong said in a statement.

According to officials, Llewellyn and her husband, Dr. Michael Lonski, maintained separate medical practices in psychology operated out of their home offices in Greenwich. Lonski was responsible for submitting claims for reimbursement to insurance programs for the psychology services performed by the two, officials said.

Officials allege that Llewellyn received payment for claims submitted by Lonski to the Medicare and Medicaid programs for psychology services that were never actually provided.

Lonski in December pleaded guilty to health care fraud in federal court in Hartford. He is scheduled to be sentenced on June 12.
